Why Use WordPress?

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of creating a website, we want to be sure you understand what WordPress is, how it works, what it does as a great content management system to handle the data types of your website, and how it compares to other website builder options.

What Is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system created to accept, store and retrieve any data type (blogs, images, graphics, emails, chat, reviews, selling) for usage on any modern technological media device. You give WordPress the information by means of a website; it will store the content in a retrieval format so you can show it on your website in the manner you choose.

How Does WordPress Work?

As with any system, WordPress must be located in and processed by something. Its location is a website which is known by a domain name. It is processed by a web server which can read the programming languages used to collect, organize, store and retrieve the data. To give a friendly face to the website, a theme which communicates with WordPress is selected. Some functions are included with the theme. Whenever a needed function is not included in the theme, a plugin written specifically for a particular activity is added unless the website owner modifies the theme.

So in summary, a domain name identifies a website which is hosted on a server and is accessible to humans through a WordPress theme which gives it style and usable functionality.

Benefits Of Using WordPress To Create A Website?

WordPress is the most progressive website content management system. It keeps up with technology innovations by updating its code.

WordPress capably handles the following.

✓ Mobile devices, tablets, desktops, laptops. You name it WordPress is a cutting edge content management system.
✓ Content writing for Pages and Posts. Pages are for content that remains constant. Posts are for passing thoughts.
✓ Media such as Images, PDF Documents, Videos, Audio.
✓ Categorization of Pages and Posts.
✓ Retrieval of content by searching, filtering and sorting.
✓ Display of content in many formats.
✓ Comments for Posts. Some themes allow comments to be made on pages as well.

The above activities listed are what WordPress does very well. This is why we want to show you step by step how to create a WordPress Website.

How Does WordPress Compare To Other Options?

After reading about other options below, you will gain a greater understanding why WordPress is our number one choice when in comes to CMS (Content Management Systems). Learn how other options differ.

WordPress allows unlimited control, flexibility and free usage. But requires separated domain purchase and hosting service.

WIX, Squarespace, Site123, Shopify and many others are not flexible because their developers maintain tight control over tools, resources, users’ choices and posted content. Domain purchase, hosting and the website builder costs are bundled.

Drupal and Joomla are for the technically savvy. Drupal is even more complex than Joomla. Even at that many technically savvy users choose WordPress because of its easy data retrieval and tremendous flexibility.

Of all the Content Management System Website Builders listed above, we recommend you use WordPress to Create a Website. WordPress is very flexible, easy for non techies, beginners, and the tech savvy to use, has enough free themes and plugins for additional functionality and does not limit the purpose or content of the website.

Step5 Look At The WordPress Website Dashboard. See All Of The WordPress Features
An Inside View Of Your Website shows the WordPress Dashboard. Each of the tabs on the left represent a feature to be used to either add content, functions or customize the design. Understand each tab first then try them out.

✓ Your WEBSITE NAME is located at the very top. See it?
✓ Below the Dashboard we see everything we can do.
HOME gives us information about the site, WordPress and Plugins.
UPDATES informs us of updates for WordPress, the active theme, and plugins.
POSTS allows us to add new or update existing posts. We can also create categories and tags for the posts.
MEDIA allows us to add images and documents to its library. Before images can be used in pages or posts, they are added to the media library.
PAGES allows us to add new or update existing pages. Note the Hestia theme lets us choose a template layout. See the drop down tab on the right side.
COMMENTS lists all comments that have been submitted to posts and in the case of Hestia both posts and pages.
APPEARANCE provides an opportunity to do further customization of the theme.
PLUGINS lists those which have been installed as well as those activated. Our must have plugins include the following.
✓ ALLInOneSEO (the features of Sitemap and Robots.text are activated because all websites must have a sitemap and a robots text. These are created automatically when the feature is activated. This plugin gives control over the SEO at the post and page level.
✓ Yoast. I installed Yoast on my second free website which I call my test site so my new pages can be reviewed for SEO before I copy them to my website for visitors. I discourage Search Engines from crawling my test site because I do not want duplicate content.)
✓ BackUpWordPress allows a schedule to be created for daily and weekly website backups.
✓ WordPress Ping Optimizer which prevents us from over informing the search engines of a post or page update. (too frequent of an update will give search engines the impression we are spamming which is negatively impact our website rankings)
USERS and TOOLS are tabs you will usually not use as a beginner.
SETTINGS has multiple tabs which are rather self-explanatory.
✓ Make sure you add your website name and tagline (a catchy phrase which tells visitors the website’s purpose), in the SETTING GENERAL tab.
✓ The SETTING READING requires a choice to be made as to what should be shown on the HOME page – the most recent Posts or a Static Page (static means that it will always appear as is until you make changes. Do not check “discourage search engines from indexing this site”. It will cause your pages and posts and website not to appear in search results.
The best way to understand the above tabs is to use them. You will not break anything. We all learn by doing.
