Introduction
As you know, privacy is becoming a primary concern of people today. Documents, and junk mail, contains enough information to allow anyone an opportunity to inconvenience or damage your life through stealing of information. To counteract this problem, paper shredders are an essential appliance in our homes.
As you are considering a paper shredder, look for those that offer a cross-cut or micro-cut as this provides the best protection against stealing information.
If you have CDs or credit cards that need shredding, be sure to select a model that has this function. Look for shredders that are easy to use and provide overload and overheat protection.
What Are The Types of Shredders?
Let’s examine these in greater detail. Remember, the purpose of a shredder is to destroy highly sensitive material like medical records, tax records, pay stubs, bank records, government records, bills or legal documents etc.
Strip-Cut
These shredders cut paper into long or straight shreds. This may offer some security, it’s not difficult for someone to reassemble the shredded paper into recovering some data. The strip cut shredder cuts the paper into numerous long strips where the thickest strip is about 3/8 inch, thinnest is 1/16 inch, and the mid-level strip is about ¾ inch. This is known as a ribbon, straight or spaghetti cut.
The security level of these machines is P-2. For sensitive documents, this shredder doesn’t cut it. They are the cheapest of the shredders on the market, but fail in providing you a peace of mind about security of sensitive documents in there destruction.
Cross-Cut
The cross cut shredders shred the paper by cutting diagonally in opposite directions. This is known as particle or confetti cut. This cut is a higher level of security. This type requires oil after emptying the shredder bin. The result is smaller chunks that that is too tricky to reassemble. The security level of these shredders are P-3 & P-4.
Micro-Cut
These shredders shred the paper into very fine pieces using micro blades. This is the best type of cut and is excellent for destroying highly sensitive material. This shredder has the highest security level for home or office use of P-4 & P-5.
Security Levels
To assist you with the security levels, we have provided the number strips or particles each sheet is reduced too. The security levels are for home and office use shredders only.
- P-2 Strip-Cut: 39 strips per sheet
- P-3 Cross-Cut: 302 particles per sheet
- P-4 Cross-Cut: 397 particles per sheet
- P-5 Micro-Cut: 3,770 particles per sheet
As you can see the higher the P number the more secure is the destruction of documents.
What Will I Be Shredding?
All shredders will be able to shred paper this is standard. However, some shredder models can also tackle items like CDs, DVDs, ID cards, credit cards, staples and paper clips.
As you go through the piles of paper that need shredding, you need to determine if any of these records have staples, paper clips and how thick are the pages. Also, will you need to include CDs, credit cards or DVDs? If the answer is yes, look for a shredder that will provide those features. The best models to consider for these records are cross-cut and micro-cut shredders.
Some shredders can shred plastic cards, CDs and DVDs. They may have a dedicated slot to shred them in. Others, just let you shred these items in the same slot as the sensitive documents. Some provide a separate bin or container for these particles. This will be important for recycling as you need to separate the plastic from the paper.
The best advice here is if your unit does not have a separate bin for plastic is to empty the bin first before shredding credit cards, CDs and DVDs.
How Much Will I Be Shredding?
This is another important question to ask yourself. How much paper do I have to shred? This will play a vital role in selecting a model for your project.
Fortunately, today shredders can process more than one sheet of paper at a time. This is known in the industry as “sheets per pass.”
As you review the shredder models they will mention the maximum thickness or the number of sheets they can shred in one pass. Paper that is folded is considered two sheets.
Small shredders can handle from 2 to 6 sheets per pass. The larger models can go higher than 20 sheets. Your best bet is to aim for models between 6 and 20 sheets for large projects. For smaller projects, 2 to 6 sheets should be fine.
How Long Do I Need To Shred?
A shredder has a cycle of run time. This is known as how long can the machine operate continuously before overheating or reaching its cool down period.
Each shredder in its specs has this information. This cycle time varies from 2 minutes to an hour or more. Determine how long you want your shredding sessions to last. Then, purchase a machine that provides what you need.
Each shredder also has a cool down period. Meaning it must rest after doing its run time cycle. Cool down periods will vary from 10 minutes and up to 40 minutes or more. Note the cool down period time for the model you purchase.
How Quick Do You Need To Shred Documents?
For home use, this may not be an issue. The shredding speed is measured in feet per minute (FPM). Most home shredders perform between 5 and 10 FPM, where heavy duty models can shred up to 30 FPM or more.
Of all the shredders models the micro-cut machines run at a slower feet per minute, because since it takes longer to cut each sheet as it cuts paper into tiny particles.
Do Shredders Overheat?
A short answer to this question is yes, all shredders can overheat. The reason is every shredder has a motor and after continuous shredding within a short time the motor can get warm and overheat. Each shredder will indicate its maximum run time.
As we mentioned, when a shredder reaches its maximum run cycle it may have an auto shut-off feature to prevent the motor from burning out. Some models may not offer this feature. Other models will automatically shut down when the motor is overheated. It won’t restart until the motor has cooled down.
Another factor in a motor overheating is the security level of the shredder. The higher the DIN security level will have a negative impact on the run-time. For example, a P-5 shredder needs more time to cool down than a P-2 shredder. The reason is the P-5 shredder produces smaller particles and requires more power from the motor which can cause it to overheat quicker.
Bin Capacity & Type
All shredders have a storage drum or bin to collect the paper strips or particles. The capacity of the bin is usually stated in gallons. The higher the number the more particles the bin can store before it needs to be emptied. This is important as you will be spending less time emptying it with a larger bin capacity. So, look for large bin capacity on the model you are considering.
The security level also determines how fast the bin gets full. The lower the DIN security the less volume it can hold. For example a P-2 shredder. The higher the DIN number the more the bin can hold because it takes up less space when paper is being shredded. For example, a P-5 shredder.
The type of container is important. There are two types of bins. A removable bin or a bottom bin with a lift-off head.
The bottom bin with a lift-off head requires you to remove the shredder head when emptying the bin. The main issue with these types is you can accidently spill the bin when trying to remove the head. This may cause some or all of the contents in the bin to spill and create a horrible mess. This is totally inconvenient. Also, the head can be heavy and for elderly folks to lift it up can be an issue.
Look for a removable bin or container in a shredder. As the bin collects the paper particles when the bin is full you just open the door or pull-out the bin to empty it. This is a far easier way to empty the waste than trying to lift the shredder head off the bin container.
In the specs of the shredder you are looking to buy, look for bin capacity and type.
Safety Features
Because a shredder contains sharp cutting blades it’s important for it to shut off when hands get too close to the opening. This to prevent small children or pets not to get hurt. Never leave the shedder unattended especially if there are kids or pets around. When you are finished with a shredding session, unplug the shredder.
Some house shredder models have safety features like a safety lock or safety sensor that detects when hands or fingers touch the opening. It shuts off the shredder immediately.
Another occurrence are paper jams. This is where the shredder stops working. The paper jam can be caused by any of the following:
- Exceeding the maximum sheet capacity
- Inserting the wrong material
- Slanted the material when inserting them into the slot which results in a paper folding jam
- Forgot to perform maintenance and lack of oil
Some models of shredders come with a feature called anti paper jam technology. It has a powerful engine that pulls the paper through during a paper jam.
Another feature of jam-proof shredders prevents a jam when the sensor detects if you have inserted too many sheets of paper than allowed. It will shut-off the unit to prevent you from shredding until you remove the excess sheets of paper.
Look for these features on the model shredder you are looking for.
Shredder Maintenance
You may be asking yourself just what type of maintenance must I perform on my shredder. The two most important things an owner can do is to keep the shredder in top shape. To do this, one must oil the blades on a regular basis and clean the blades of dust and small pieces of paper stuck in them. This can affect the performance of the machine.
- Oiling The Shredder – There are two ways in which you can properly oil the shredder. You can buy shredder oil or you can use lubricant sheets.
- Lubricant Sheets: A lubricant sheet is a pre-oiled sheet you can shred in the shredder. The sheet looks like an envelope. Just insert the sheet in the slot and as it is being shredded it is lubricating the cutting blades of the shredder.
- Shredder Oil: Another method is oiling the blades is using shredder oil. Earlier in this article we have a video on how to properly oil a shredder. Click HERE to view this video now. Or, refer to the owner’s manual for the proper instructions on how to do it. Note: If your unit did not come with shredder oil, you can use any type of vegetable oil to the job.
- To Clean The Shredder: Take a vacuum and place the device over the slot where sheets are inserted. Go back and forth a couple of times to loosen and gather up as much paper particles as possible and getting the accumulated dust. If some should drop into the bin, just empty it.
- How Often Should I Oil My Shredder? For P-3 and P-4 security level shredders, it’s recommended to oil the shredder every time you empty the paper bin. If you own a P-5 shredder, after every 15 minutes. P-2 shredders do not require any oil.
Noise Levels
Shredders can be noisy at times. However, the average shredder produces about 65 decibels when shredding. This is equal to the sound of a washing machine. It’s best to try to look for shredders and run quiet or with little noise as possible. The manufactures of shredders can tell you the noise level of their machines. In some cases, it may be mentioned in the specifications or features section of the unit you are considering to purchase. Look for this information. If it’s not there, contact the manufacture before purchase or ask the salesperson at the store.
Noise shredder levels:
- Silent: Less than 60 dB
- Normal: 60 to 70 dB
- Loud: Above 70 dB
When searching for a shredder look for models that produce less than 60 dB for a quieter running of the machine.
Final Shredder Tips
Here are some final tips to make your shredding experience more enjoyable.
- As you are shredding, keep an eye on the waste basket or bin. Do not overload it as it can damage the motor or cause jams. Look for models that have a clear window to allow you to see through as it is being filled.
- We mentioned this earlier but is worth mentioning it again. Look for shredders that have pull-out bins. These are more convenient to empty than the ones you have to lift the entire shredding head off the waste bin.
- When looking for a shredder, take notice of the amount of time the shredder can run continuously before reaching it’s down time or overheats. Some machine run times are quite short and you may experience short shredding sessions. The objective is running the shredder for as long as possible before reaching the down time. This is good for large shredding jobs.
- Some shredder models may include the number of sheets that can be inserted into the slot for one pass. To be much more effective, shred one or two sheets less than the maximum. For example, if a shredder can take 12 sheets per pass, feed it 10 or 11 sheets. This will extend the life of the motor, extend the continuous run time, and prevent paper jams.
- If you should have kids or pets around, it recommended to look for a shredder model that has a safety shut-off function. What this does is automatically switches off the shredder when fingers or paws get too close to the cutting blades.
- The last tip, if your shredder does not have a separate bin or compartment for credit cards, CDs and DVDs, empty the waste bin first of paper before shredding these items. Shredded paper is recyclable. However, CDs, DVDs and credit cards may not as it depends upon your local recycling rules of your community. I don’t think you want to spend hours of time trying to pick out all the plastic chips from a full bin of shredded paper.
