Air Purifiers Buying Guide

Below you will find the buyers guide for air purifiers. You should find some interesting information about COVID-19 and some benefits of using an air purifier in your home. This is especially true if someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma.

Air Purifiers Table of Topics

Below you will find the air purifier table of topics. Select or click on the link for the topic of interest. You will be taken directly to that section. Or, you can scroll down to view them all.

Benefits of Air Purifiers

The biggest benefit of air purifiers is the clean air you will be breathing. The indoor air can be full of bacteria and other containments that can be harmful to your overall health. These units remove up to 99.97% of airborne bacteria allergens and 99% of airborne germs and odor causing bacteria. They also remove odors like burnt food, fish, smoke, and trap dust.

Air purifiers also help those who suffer from seasonal allegories. They stop germs from spreading so you won’t catch your child’s cold or flu. Another benefit is it’s keeps your lungs healthy as it removes dander, pollen, dust, and other airborne particles.

The bottom line is even though they may not remove COVID-19 bacteria they do play a role in providing good quality air which is good for your health.

Ozone Levels

OSHA guidelines for O3 in the workplace are based on time-weighted averages. Ozone levels should never exceed the following average: 0.10 ppm (parts per million) for 8 hours per day exposure. For more detailed information on safe ozone levels, see the bullet points below.

The OSHA website cites several ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) guidelines for ozone in the workplace:

  • 0.2 ppm for no more than 2 hours exposure
  • 0.1 ppm for 8 hours per day exposure doing light work
  • 0.08 ppm for 8 hours per day exposure doing moderate work
  • 0.05 ppm for 8 hours per day exposure doing heavy work

For more information, see the OSHA webpage regarding ozone: http://www.osha.gov/dts/chemicalsampling/data/CH_259300.html

Some air purifiers may produce some ozone during their operation. Usually below the OSHA standard.

Do Air Purifiers Really Work?

This is a very popular question you probably see on the internet. What you need to know is air purifier developers are not allowed to advertise their devices as a health product in the United States. The reason is their benefits are not straightforward. Instead of telling about great health outcomes, their advertisements focuses on the harmful substances their products filter out. Because of this, it is the reason why they cannot advertise their air purifiers as a health product.

The answer to the question is air purifiers really do work. They filter out particulates out of the air very effectively. It is even more effective when a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is used.

Unless you live in a particularly polluted environment, you or your children are immuno-compromised, you probably don’t need one.

Do They Protect Against COVID-19, and Other Seasonal Pollutants?

To meet the standard a filter must remove 99.97% of particles in the air that are 0.3 micrometers in size. HEPA filters are effective with particles larger and smaller than that size. Pollen, smoke particulate and aerosol droplets that can transmit COVID-19 can all be filtered out of the air with such a filter. COVID-19 are 0.125 micrometers in size.

That said, don’t count on air purifiers to protect you if you’re cohabitating with a contagious person. Dr. Richard Shaughnessy, the director of Indoor Air Research University of Tulsa, “said transmission of COVID usually happens due to close contact with an infected person. If you’re sitting on a couch and chatting with someone who is infected, an air purifier across the room isn’t going to remove all the harmful particles they exhale before they have a chance to reach you.”

If you have an individual that is sick with COVID-19, running an air purifier in the quarantine room may help protect other family members or caregivers. The same is true for healthcare workers that self-quarantine when they come home.

But you may also be wondering if an air purifier can prevent COVID-19 by capturing virus particles that could be traveling in the air.

Consumer Reports own experts weighed in on this and said “the consensus is that while air purifiers probably don’t offer much protection in most circumstances, they may be worthwhile in a few specific ones.”

They go on to say “But even if you live with a healthcare worker or someone sick with COVID-19, before you run out to buy an air purifier, our experts say that simply opening up the windows in your home to let in fresh air will help dilute indoor contaminants—including virus particles. If airing out the room isn’t an option, you could try using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier.”

Another quote from CR, “In theory, if an air purifier removes viruses from the air, it reduces concentrations in the room and thus reduces the potential for exposure,” says Linsey Marr, an environmental engineer and professor at Virginia Tech who specializes in airborne disease transmission, air quality, and nanotechnology. “So there is a mechanistic reason to think that air purifiers could help reduce transmission.”

I think you can agree that the jury is still out on this one. Even if air purifiers don’t handle COVID-19, they do well if someone is suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions where fresh air is required.

Air Purifier Buying Tips

When you are considering in purchasing an air purifier you need to look for features that will provide healthful benefits to those that suffer from allergies, asthma and other respiratory systems.

Some of these features are mentioned below.

  • HEPA Filters – When looking for an air purifier model be sure it uses an HEPA filter. They remove 99.97% of airborne particles which include allergens, pet odor, hair, dander, smoke, cooking fumes, mold, germs, bacteria and large dust particles.
  • Coverage Area – Each model air purifier is rated for specific square feet of coverage. Be sure the model you choose is sufficient for the square footage of the room or rooms where it will be used.
  • Replace Filter Indicator – This feature is important so you will be reminded when the filter or filters need to be changed. With our busy schedules today, this feature is a must. Otherwise, the machine will not provide purified air or removing the allergens as before if you cannot replace the old filter.
  • Timer Levels – This is another great feature as the machine will operate for the specific amount of time you select. This is generally in hours. Some units come with an auto setting that will switch to the “low” mode when the “good” air quality has been reached. Visa versa, the mode will change to “high” when the air quality is less than good.
  • Fan Speed Settings – This feature allows you to change to a specific fan speed. Most units come with Low, Medium, or High. Some have a turbo setting, which is max speed. Some units also have a sleep fan mode. The decibels at the turbo this setting are usually above 60 dB. Where the decibel level at the sleep or low mode are between 24 to 35 decibels.
  • Air Quality Indicator – This feature tracks the quality of the air in the room. Most units come with 3 indicators showing good, fair and bad. The colors representing these levels are different with each model. The color is displayed somewhere on the machine letting you know at a glance the quality of the air in the room.
  • Replacement Filters – When purchasing an air purifier, they come with pre-installed filters or the filters are in the box and must be manually installed. When the replace filter indicator light comes on, you need a new filter to replace the old one with. Be sure to have replacement filters on hand. When the filter indicator tells you its fair, this is a warning to order replacement filters.

The above features are nice to have options. Look over these options carefully and decide on which ones are essential to your needs. If your budget allows, I highly recommend trying to get all of these features on the air purifier model you decide on purchasing.

More about filters. Filters generally last from 3 months to 1 year and must be replaced. Also, some units have washable filters in which they can save you money in not having to purchase replacement filters. Another fact, replacement filters can be expensive. So, when planning on an air purifier purchase, find out how often filters must be replaced and the cost of the new one. Some units require two filters. Replacing the pre-installed HEPA filter and the carbon filter. In those instances, get the prices for both.

With this information you can determine your annual costs for the unit and help you budget accordingly.

Does An Air Purifier Capture the Coronavirus?

As mentioned before, HEPA filters are effective and certified to capture 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter. The novel coronavirus itself is 0.125 microns, but when people cough, talk, or breathe—initially are larger, around 1 micron. That size can be captured easily by HEPA filters.

That means an air purifier has to be capable of consistently drawing in enough air to reduce the amount of virus particles in the air. The faster an air purifier can cycle air through the filter, the better its chances of catching virus particles.

When changing the HEPA filter you need to take some precautions. The coronavirus can live on plastic and steel for up to three days. There is no information yet on how long the coronavirus can survive on filters.

While the machine is in operation, don’t touch the air purifier. When it comes time to change the filter, wear gloves and a mask if you have one. Then take the air purifier outside and clean, using disinfectant, the exterior. Remove the filter and dispose of it in a sealed bag. If your model air purifier has a fabric pre-filter, wash it.

One note about advertisements you may be seeing about using air purifiers against the coronavirus: Be wary if you see products that claim they can outright prevent COVID-19 or destroy the coronavirus.

Be aware of air purifiers that claim to kill viruses using a UV light. CR’s response to this is “we suggest consumers take these claims with a grain of salt because there isn’t enough concrete evidence yet that proves they work in these settings we tested.”

The bottom line here is don’t take any chances that an air purifier can eliminate the COVID-19 virus.

Final Thoughts

AHAM Verifide Rating Label
AHAM Verifide Rating Label

As you consider which brand of air purifier to purchase there are some other things to look for that were not mentioned earlier.

Look for a model that has an AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) certified label on the box. The label displays the CADR rates for tobacco smoke, dust and pollen. The higher the ratings the faster the purifier filters the air. The label also states the suggested room size in which the air purifier will work most effectively.

They ensure of independent testing on the units, that they meet the CADR requirements for the coverage area on the label.

Another feature is if it bears the Energy Star label. If it does, the unit meets the requirements for dust CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) per watt and standby power. The bottom line here is it means the unit uses less energy when compared against a non-Energy Star product. Saves you money on electricity usage.

Conclusion

It’s important now that patients have the ability to reduce some of their symptoms by reducing airborne irritants using an air purifier. This is also true for individuals who suffer from seasonal allergies or have respiratory health issues. Using an air purifier will help them tremendously.

Allergens such as bacteria, viruses, fungal and mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and chemical pollutants does take a toll on a person’s respiratory system.  And not just those with allergies. As most of these pollutants are not seen by the naked eye or absorbed by anything around the home, the best way to remove these potentially harmful substances is through the use of an air purifier.
